Kelly Morrow, MS, RDN, FAND (Department Chair)

Biography

Kelly Morrow, MS, RDN, FAND is an Associate Professor and the Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science at Bastyr University and Clinical Faculty at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle, Washington. At the Bastyr Center, Kelly leads teams of nutrition graduate students in an integrative medicine teaching clinic where they collaborate with Naturopathic Doctors, Medical Doctors and practitioners of East Asian Medicine and Acupuncture. Since 2002, she has been teaching faculty at Bastyr University in both the undergraduate and master’s programs in nutrition and currently teaches Nutrition Clinic Practicum, Dietary Supplementation and Nutrition Assessment and Therapy. She has also lectured in the Naturopathic Medicine, Midwifery and Acupuncture programs at Bastyr. Kelly regularly speaks to lay populations and at professional conferences, is a media representative for Bastyr University and a past Media Representative for the Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Kelly has delivered talks for the Academy of Nutrition, Northwest Renal Dietitians, The Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy, The Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, The Greater Seattle Dietetic Association, The North Sound Dietetic Association, Dietitians in Healthcare Communities, and The Bastyr Center Healthy Living Series. Kelly is a content developer for the Inflammation and Environmental Exposures and Elimination Modules of the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certificate of Training through the Academy of Nutrition and the author of the Integrative Nutrition and Dietary Supplements chapter for the 14th and 15th Eds. of Krause and Mahan’s Food and the Nutrition Care Process and is a co-editor for the 15th Ed. Kelly has served on Professional Advancement and Communications committees for Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM) and is also a past Chair.

Education

  • BS in psychology from the University of Colorado

Past Experience

Morrow's background includes both clinical and culinary experience. She has worked in private practice since 2000 and has also worked at Evergreen Hospital in radiation oncology, at the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Center and in Community Health Promotions. She also gained experience working in the dietary supplement industry as an account representative for Integrative Therapeutics. Ms. Morrow completed a three-part intensive whole-foods cooking certificate program through the School of Natural Cookery. She has assisted and taught cooking classes to all ages and is able to help clients modify recipes and create menu plans.

Classes Taught

She teaches nutritional supplementation, maternal and infant nutrition, and nutrition assessment and therapy in both the graduate and undergraduate programs.

Interests

Although Morrow practices as a generalist, she has a special interest in maternal and pediatric nutrition, food allergies, renal (kidney) nutrition, and cancer. She has authored a number of articles and regularly serves as a public speaker and counselor on diet and nutrition. She has given a number of lectures on nutrition-related topics to lay audiences, corporate groups and health care professionals. She has been a contributor to the PKD Progress, the national newsletter of the PKD Foundation for research in Polycystic Kidney Disease. She is often quoted in national magazines and newspapers, including the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, The Seattle Times, Bottom Line Daily Health News, Bastyr Magazine, Northwest Prime Time, Healing Lifestyles and Spas magazine among others.

Philosophy

Morrow provides patients with the most up-to-date information on nutrition so they can make educated choices regarding their health. Having received training in both holistic and mainstream nutrition, she is able to meet a wide spectrum of needs. Ms. Morrow practices nutrition care for the whole family, including food allergies, gluten intolerance, weight loss, blood sugar regulation, heart disease, kidney disease, mental health, cancer, and infant and childhood nutrition.
